LOCOMOTIVES

General Motors Electro-Motive Division built the Spirit of Washington F9 locomotives in 1954 and 56'. Locomotives 82 and 84 produce 1750 horsepower each and are diesel electric.

In a diesel electric locomotive, the diesel engine drives a generator, which supplies electricity to run the traction motors, which cause the wheels to turn.

The B & O Line originally owned both units, which was the predecessor to CSX Transportation. They were purchased from the Maryland Department of Transportation in 1995.

HEAD END POWER CAR

That is what we call the one red car at the end of the train. Prior to its purchase from a private car collector in Georgia, our HEP car was in service with Amtrak as a baggage car.

This car has been modified to hold a 450kw generator that provides electricity for the entire train.
